The store’s owning and
operating duo are a retail dream
team: Peregrine Honig, an
internationally collected artist, is a
master of interlacing fashion and fine
art, while Alexis Burggrabe brings her
financial savvy to the Kansas City
store’s profitability.
❤ We love the boutique’s
unexpected bohemian charm and
vivid color palette. Hand-printed
wallpaper, ombré silk velvet curtains
and custom-made ironwork stand out
as the finest features of the store.
Exposed historic paint layers and architectural touches add rare character,
solidifying the space as a living work of art. Products ranging from large
international labels to small, independent designers are displayed in lavish
wooden cabinets made from antique candy cases and scientific library
drawers. Birdies’ clientele also benefit from the staff’s personal care –
returning customers’ sizes and preferences are kept on file – and the shop is
open even after-hours to host live music events and theatrical productions.
Indeed, the store never wanders far from its cultured origins, allowing its staff
of mostly art students to recontextualize lingerie pieces for impactful window
displays. From the horseshoe hanging above the entrance to the eponymous
little bird motif, the store is filled with well-considered touches that are at
once refined and authentic.
